Fixed line phone numbers in Vietnam follow the format Area Code + Phone Number. The area codes depend on the province and/or city.
To dial a number within the same province or city, only the phone number needs to be dialed.
When dialing from a different province/city, follow the format 0 + Area Code + Phone Number.
At the moment, area codes may have from 1 to 3 digits, while phone numbers from 5 to 8 digits.
The different area codes are described below.
[+] Area codes starting with 1
In the past 18 and 19 used to be the area codes for Hoa Binh province and Ha Giang province respectively. However, with effect from 24 November 2007, the area codes for these provinces have been changed to 218 and 219. All area codes in Area 1, which used to belong to fixed line numbers, are now reserved for mobile phone numbers.

All telephone numbers in this area have 7 digits.
[+] Area codes starting with 3
With effect from 5 October 2008, all telephone numbers in this area have 7 digits.
[+] Area code 4
This area code is used exclusively by Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. All telephone numbers in this area have 8 digits.

With effect from 5 October 2008, all telephone numbers in this area have 7 digits.
[+] Area codes starting with 6
With effect from 5 October 2008, all telephone numbers in this area have 7 digits.
[+] Area code 69
69 is the special area code dedicated for military service. The current distribution is as follows:
- 69 3 xxxxx - for the Central area of Vietnam
- 69 4 xxxxx - for the Southern area of Vietnam
- 69 5 xxxxx - for the Northern area of Vietnam
[+] Area codes starting with 7
With effect from 5 October 2008, all telephone numbers in this area have 7 digits.
[+] Area code 8
This area code is used exclusively by Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the largest city in Vietnam. All telephone numbers in this area have 8 digits.
[+] Area code 80
This area code is used exclusively by the government. It is followed by a 5-digit phone number.
[+] Area codes starting with 9
Most area codes starting with 9 are now used for mobile phone numbers, except 99, which is used for VSAT.
[+] Mobile telephone numbers
In Vietnam, mobile phone numbers follow the format 09y xxxxxxx or 01yy xxxxxxx. The first 0 is known as the trunk code.
Excluding the leading zero, the next 2 or 3 digits (9y or 1yy) specify the mobile phone operator. Some mobile phone operators have been given more than one operator code.
The mobile phone operator codes are distributed as followed:
Among these, MobiFone, Vinaphone, Viettel Mobile and HT Mobile (new name Vietnamobile) are GSM operators. S-Fone and EVN Telecom are CDMA operators. Interestingly, HT Mobile used to be a CDMA operator, but has changed to support only GSM recently[when?]. GTel Mobile is another operator which has just been licensed recently, but its operator code is still unknown.
